Recommended read ... Ben Aaronovitch - 'Rivers of London'.

Might be a bit Londoner-ish to travel - but some comments made me laugh. And that doesn't happen often.

I've downloaded the second book ...

I wouldn't have believed that the media would be able to go on so endlessly about the R-o-y-a-l- W-e-d-d-i-n-g. They seem to be able to bring it into anything - football reports, weather forecasts, Dow-Jones index - whatever. I'm being forced to hit the mute button about every fourth word.

Roll on Saturday!

Amazing April - part 1 [Apr. 8th, 2011|05:34 am]
Well - here he is! Nearly two weeks late, but he has made it before his aunt's wedding.

My grandson

We spent yesterday's visiting time walking up and down the corridor as we all swapped round to accommodate the 'only two visitors' rule.

I hope I've remembered how to do this. It's been a long time since I've posted a picture.

Well, I've more or less guaranteed that the improvement in the weather will continue apace.

I've bought a warm coat with a lovely furry lining!

It'll be shorts and t-shirts weather next week.

(Have I really not posted since August? Where does the time go!)

The voter registration form arrived today. Not unusual - it turns up about this time every year, although the deadline for completion is mid-October. Long enough to forget about it completely.

Anyway, on the front of the envelope it says ...

Save your Council money
- please action immediately

The action I want to take is to incinerate the envelope.

Tell me, dear reader, am I alone in this?

Sport overload!

What with the World Cup in South Africa and Wimbledon in - well - Wimbledon, I am at the point of wanting to throw bricks through televisions. Although, perhaps, switching them off would be simpler and more eco-friendly.

Although the match at Wimbledon where the match was played over three days and the final set lasted over eight hours before ending 70-68 was quite amusing in a historic, 'now they'll ban potentially endless final sets' way.

Breathe, I keep telling myself. It's not important.

... ....

But how do I stop wanting to strangle my husband for keeping on saying, 'the point being is ...'?

Today I heard a BBC journalist say 'off of'.

Woe, woe and thrice woe.

It snowed! Again! It's outrageous. I don't know what the world is coming to.

We hadn't even got rid of the last lot, either.

Anyone would think this was ... Iowa, or something.

For anyone who happens to have £250 to spare ... The Historical Thesaurus of the Oxford English Dictionary sounds interesting.

It's only taken 44 years to put it together and it gives - and references - all the ways people used to say something and contains gems of knowledge. For example, Shakespeare would never have described something as 'pink' since the colour was not known at that before 1828. And there are some lovely insults from different periods that have fallen sadly out of use. Like earming, wyrmlic, hinderling (Anglo Saxon). Or dogbolt, drivel, marmoset, skitbrains, shack-rag. (16th century). And then you can choose from fitchcock, muckworm, whiffler, ramscallion, snool.

And I was interested to learn that people keep inventing new terms for 'immediately', as people keep using them to mean 'when I get around to it', so that they end up meaning 'soon'. 'Soon' being one of them. Together with 'momentarily'.

If you want a copy, make haste! The price goes up to £275 on 31st January 2010.
